Welcome

Who am I?

I am Sarah.  I am a Multimedia graduate and jewellery designer.  I like all genres of music (but please don't make me listen to more than two hours of doof-doof or death metal).  I have irrational fears of steep inclines, spending large amounts of money and Conan O'Brien.  I am a cat person, I am a chocoholic, I have an interest in molecular gastronomy and... I am a geek.  What type of geek?  I am a Quirky Geek, sort of like Zooey Dreschanel.  In school I was known as a Band Geek and Maths Geek.  At Uni I was the Programming Chic Geek and Role Playing Geek. These days it's Social Media and Design.  I've always been the Computer Geek.  I'd love to say that i'm a Gaming Geek, but the truth is I have more success creating them than actually playing them.  Fantasy vs Sci-fi: Fantasy.  Star Wars vs Star Trek: Star Trek.  Harry Potter vs LotR: Harry Potter.  Ninjas vs Pirates: Ninjas.  Robots vs Zombies: Zombies.  Mac vs PC: PC.  Apple vs Microsoft: Google/Android.

 What have I been doing?

In the year of 2010 I:

  • was trapped by a flood then relocated to Brisbane, which had its own flood by that time
  • was Treasurer (and instructor) of the Rockhampton Lapidary Club
  • was a good aunty (baby sitting etc)
  • joined Girl Geek Coffees
  • gave blood for the first time
  • achieved an Apply First-Aid Certificate
  • started learning German (again)
  • did volunteer web translations (German-English)
  • designed, created and sold my own line of jewellery

This year I:

  • will move house again
  • will start a career, not just get a job
  • will endeavour to increase my fitness
  • will join a Lapidary club in Brisbane

Why do I want to work:

in Graphic/Web Design/Development?

My grandmother was a painter.  My father was a Radar Technician.  Born with creativity and computer logic, it felt natural for me to utilise both of these skills in a field that requires both.  I was fortunate enough to be born into a generation that grew up with computers,  and this was especially true in my household.  I feel equally comfortable writing code as I am using the Adobe Creative Suite.

in Advertising?

I'll admit, I am a bit of a TV addict.  As a kid, I could reenact any TV commercial, current or past (as long as it aired sometime in my memorable lifetime).  I saw TV advertisements as short films with a purpose and creating these greatly appealed to me.  As I grew, I gained an interest in other mediums, such as print, the web and radio.  Tapping into my musical background, I can also write and arrange catchy jingles.
Most of all, I love the idea of working (creatively) in a team on a project that has purpose.  Where all your hard work, energy and passion has been put into the project, building up to the deadlines, the definitive end, to create something wonderful, something tangible, that can be experienced by anyone and would be able to say, 'I was apart of that, I did that'.
This is also one of the reasons I want to work in Production/Post-production in the film industry:

as a 3D Modeller/Animator?

The magic of film has captured the imagination and hearts of most of the earthly population.  Nothing plays a bigger part in creating this magic than SFX and CGI.  I am one of the very first 3D Modeler/Animators to come from my home town, being one of the few to graduate from the first offering of these courses at CQU.  I would love nothing more than to work on a dragon in a major feature film, but I guess this is every animator's dream.  I also would like to work on eyes.  They are the 'window to the soul' and a lot of emotive information can be protrayed through the colour of the iris, dilation of the pupil and movement of the muscles around the eye.  This field is cutting edge; working with the technology as it is created.

as a Paramedic?

Many people have told me that I should become a nurse.  I treat people in need with understanding and gentle touch and have an understanding of body function.  For some reason that never really appealed to me.  I wanted to be a surgeon.  I deal well with pressure, prioritise well and am excellent working with things that are small, complex and delicate.  However, I did not feel that my brain had the ability to memorise all the facts required for University study in this field.  I see being a Paramedic as a career that would suit me well in all regards.  It combines my love of medicine, helping people and full-on hands on work.  Unfortunately, the entrance requirments have now changed and I don't see this as a reality anymore.  I'm also considering midwifery.
